Has Your Toddler Had A Dental Exam?

mother and daughterIf you have a toddler who has not been to a dentist, we urge you to consider making an appointment today by calling Dr. Wayne C. Harper at 352-867-7181.

The best time to start dental check-ups for young children is when their teeth first appear. This may seem a bit early, however it is a great time to become acquainted with preventative dentistry options such as sealants and fluoride supplements. Your dentist can assess the health of your child’s teeth before problems begin and it’s also helpful for parents to get a refresher course on proper oral hygiene for young children.

My name is Wayne Harper of Dr. Wayne C. Harper. The American Academy of Pediatrics advises parents to begin children’s dentist visits before the third birthday. If you have questions about pediatric dentistry, please give us a call at Dr. Wayne C. Harper.

Children with an increased risk of dental problems should receive a dental examination as early as possible. Here are some of the risk factors:

  • Sleeping with a bottle
  • Drinking juice continually during the day
  • Abnormal tooth development
  • Thumb sucking
  • Tooth grinding
  • A mother with significant tooth decay
  • Other health problems

Bring your questions to our genuine staff at Dr. Wayne C. Harper. We are located at 1800 SE 17th Street Suite 602 in Ocala, Florida. You can reach us at 352-867-7181. We want your child to have a healthy smile right from the start and enjoy a lifetime of oral health.

Do Veneers Make Teeth Look Bigger?

Marion County cosmetic dental and tooth implants

A well-designed veneer does not make your tooth look larger – unless you want it to. A veneer can correct many cosmetic dental problems and is a minimally invasive restoration. During the placement of some porcelain veneers, an extremely thin layer of enamel is removed from the tooth.

If you have teeth with damage, discoloration, an irregular shape, or minimal to moderate misalignment, you have several dental remedies to choose from. Don’t worry if you feel that veneers seem to have more cons than pros for you. You have alternative options. We can analyze your smile, your needs, and your goals to develop a perfect plan.

Dr. Wayne C. Harper offers the highest standard of dental care and the full spectrum of vital services including the following:

Sedation dentistry
Smile makeovers
Cosmetic dentistry
General dentistry
Adult orthodontics

Dr. Wayne C. Harper has been improving smiles since 1985. We’ve scheduled Fort McCoy patients for sedation dentistry. We’ve served patients from The Villages with veneers. We’ve performed popular procedures like smile makeovers for our patients in Marion County. And we can advise you on any restorative, preventative, or cosmetic procedure in which you are interested.

Ask us about invisible braces, the cost of a dental bridge, or how long it takes to whiten your teeth.

With our busy schedules, we don’t want a long wait to see the dentist. Dr. Wayne Harper’s team schedules carefully so we can keep your consultation convenient, pleasant, informative and thorough. Our staff is genuine and equipped to do it right.

Hello, I am Dr. Wayne Harper. Welcome to my dental blog. I serve my patients at my dental practice, Dr. Wayne C. Harper, which is located at 1800 SE 17th Street Suite 602 in Ocala, Florida. I have been practicing general and cosmetic dentistry since 1985.

There has never been a better time to practice dentistry because dental procedures unavailable just a few years ago are now commonplace. During my career, I have become proficient in a wide variety of advanced dental treatments aided by breakthroughs in techniques and tooth restoration materials. My passion is providing the highest standard of dental care for my Gainesville area patients and creating the healthiest and most beautiful smiles possible.

If you are not familiar with the latest dental procedures, you might not realize what cosmetic and restorative dentistry can achieve. A total smile redesign involves a combination of cosmetic dental procedures which may include dental crowns, porcelain veneers, dental bonding, tooth implants, inlays and onlays, gum contouring, teeth whitening and, in some cases, orthodontia.

If you have dental anxiety, we can help. Sedation dentistry, sometimes called conscious sedation, will calm your nerves and help you relax while you undergo your smile transformation.

If you are in the Ocala Marion County, Fort McCoy, or The Villages area and have cosmetic dentistry questions, schedule a consultation by calling us at 352-867-7181.

Dental Sealant Q & A

dental sealants Ocala

Q. What are dental sealants?
A. Dental sealants are permanent plastic barriers applied to the biting surfaces of teeth. They prevent cavities by filling in the grooves and fissures where food particles are particularly difficult to remove. Most Gainesville pediatric dentists and family dentists offer sealants to their patients.

A. Do sealants significantly reduce tooth decay?
Q. Yes. Studies show that dental sealants can lessen the risk of decay by 70%!

Q. How are dental sealants applied to the teeth?
A. Your dentist applies the sealant resin as a liquid which quickly hardens and adheres tightly to the pits and grooves. The procedure is quick, simple and painless.

Q. Which teeth can benefit the most from sealants?
A. Sealants are most commonly applied to the first and second molars because they are at the highest risk for decay.

Q. When should sealants be applied?
A. The best time is early – while the teeth are cavity-free. Your dentist will advise you.

Q. Are sealants just for kids?
A. Not necessarily. Talk to your Ocala general dentist about whether sealants could benefit you.

Q. Is brushing and flossing still necessary for the teeth with sealants?
A. Yes. Vigilant oral hygiene is still important to keep teeth and gums healthy. Even the teeth with sealants are at risk for decay along the gumline.

Children’s Cavities Are Not ‘Just A Part Of Growing Up’

Gainesville Cosmetic Dentistry

Today’s dental blog focuses on a preventative treatment often used to help impede the development of cavities in children.

Dental sealants are a thin coat of clear resin that is applied to the biting surfaces of teeth, usually the rear molars. The back teeth are more prone to cavities because is difficult to reach them with a tooth brush and the surfaces contain pits and grooves that easily trap bacteria. It is hard for many adults to clean their back molars and almost impossible for our young The Villages children.

Dental sealants fill in the pits and grooves on the rear molars to create a smooth surface. Gainesville family dentists most often recommend sealants for children’s permanent back teeth, though sometimes they are used for adults, too.

Ocala parents may not realize how quickly a cavity can form in a young child’s mouth. Many Fort McCoy area kids that we see develop cavities even before they start kindergarten!

It is vital that our local parents start regular dental visits early for their toddlers and young children. The American Dental Association advises that a child’s initial dental exam take place soon after the first tooth erupts, but no later than the toddler’s first birthday.

Dental sealants protect teeth that have no decay (primary prevention) and also prevent further decay progression in teeth that show very early signs of disease (secondary prevention).

At Dr. Wayne C. Harper, we take special care of our young Ocala dental patients. We want each child’s dental visits to be pleasant and painless so they will never develop a fear of the dentist. We advise parents on the specific dental issues associated with each stage of childhood. Ask us about fluoride, sports mouthguards, and orthodontic treatment.

I am Wayne Harper of Dr. Wayne C. Harper. I don’t believe that childhood cavities are unavoidable. Call my office at 352-867-7181 to schedule an Ocala dental exam.

I provide comprehensive restorative and cosmetic dentistry for Gainesville people of all ages. My office is located at 1800 SE 17th Street Suite 602 in Ocala. You can learn more about my practice at http://www.ocalasmiles.com/meet-dr-harper/

What’s The Latest With Veneers?

Ocala Prepless Veneers One of the latest breakthroughs in Ocala cosmetic dentistry is prepless veneers. Though thousands of Marion County and Fort McCoy smile restoration patients who have received traditional veneers are happy with the results, some Florida dental patients have delayed this procedure because they do not want to lose healthy tooth structure.

Ocala prepless veneers are a less-invasive procedure for transforming Gainesville smiles. New  prepless veneers at Dr. Wayne C. Harper are incredibly thin shells which adhere to the face of teeth and require no removal of tooth enamel. Most Ocala prepless veneers are about the thickness of two pieces of paper. Because the color is built into the veneers (instead of being applied after fabrication), they look like your natural teeth–only better!

Our experienced Florida ceramists are skilled artists. They create each custom veneer with the optimum shape, color and thickness for your new smile. Another great feature of the Dr. Wayne C. Harper prepless veneers application procedure is that it requires no anesthesia or drilling.

If you are embarrassed by misaligned, discolored or broken teeth, prepless veneers may be a smile restoration solution that you can feel good about.

Call Dr. Wayne C. Harper to learn more about prepless veneers. It is the first step toward your dazzling new smile!

Gainesville Dental Patients, Take Care Of Your Toothbrush!

Gainesville Dental Patients Take Care Of Your Toothbrush!

The common household toothbrush. Every Ocala home has at least one, and hopefully all Ocala residents are brushing their teeth after each meal. While cosmetic dentistry and a complete smile makeover seem to be all the rage these days, daily brushing is still the most important thing you can do for your oral health.

It has been said that each toothbrush can contain millions of bacteria. But don’t worry, those bacteria come from our mouths, which harbor equal amounts of bacteria. For a person with a healthy immune system, these bacteria pose no threat.

However, a few common sense tips might keep any unnecessary germs from affecting the toothbrushes of Marion County, Fort McCoy, and The Villages dental patients.

First, be sure to store your toothbrush as far away from the toilet as possible, and close the toilet lid before flushing. Each flush of the toilet releases a spray of bacteria into the air, so it’s best to just eliminate the spray.

Next, since bacteria like a moist environment, store your toothbrush upright and without a travel case so that it can dry completely between uses.

The American Dental Association recommends replacing your toothbrush every three to four months. Brushing and flossing are the key to good oral health, and doing both each day will keep Gainesville dental patients’ risk for gun disease, cavities, and bad breath low.

Keep your smile bright by visiting Dr. Wayne C. Harper regularly and practicing proper oral hygiene.

Dr. Wayne Harper has been a dentist in the Ocala area since 1985. We can answer any questions you have about cosmetic dentistry procedures such as tooth whitening, porcelain veneers, dental implants, and clear braces.

Dr. Wayne C. Harper Guide To Healthy Tooth Enamel

Dr. Wayne C. Harper Guide To Healthy Tooth Enamel

Here at Dr. Wayne C. Harper, we want your teeth to last a lifetime! Tooth enamel is one of the hardest parts of the body, but it is non-renewable so it is important not to not neglect or abuse our teeth. Daily teeth and gum care is the best way to protect tooth enamel.

Even though every Gainesville drug store carries hard bristle brushes, we recommend brushing with a soft brush after every meal to gently brush away acid. Scrub too hard, and you can erode enamel. It is ideal to brush immediately after eating, but brushing within 60 minutes of a meal has benefits. The quicker you remove food from your teeth, the better it is for your enamel.

Flossing regularly is also important to keep gums healthy. Whether the food is on tooth surfaces, or hidden in between, it is not doing your enamel any good.

Wayne Harper recommends a checkup and thorough cleaning every six months. Our skilled hygienists remove tartar, a substance that attracts plaque to the surface of the teeth and can weaken the teeth’s structures. Regular checkups prevent problems and save you money on expensive restorations down the road.

Remember: don’t use your teeth for opening packages! Keep scissors and bottle openers handy. At Dr. Wayne C. Harper, we see damaged teeth and dental work as a result of patients using their teeth as tools. Biting down on something too hard, like ice or hard candy can also damage enamel.

Attention Marion County, Ocala, and The Villages athletes: be sure to use a mouthguard for team, contact, and recreational sports.

Teeth grinding is also a common dental threat. Be careful not to grind teeth, this can not only wear away enamel but also pave ways for cavities to get in. If you grind your teeth while you are sleeping, make an appointment to be fitted for a night guard. Your enamel will thank you.

Lastly, remember: drink water. Coffee, sports drinks, soda, wine, and tea all contain a lot of acid or sugar, and in some cases both. Cut back, or at least use a straw. These drinks cause a lot of tooth decay for non-water drinkers in the Gainesville.

We hope you find these Dr. Wayne C. Harper tips helpful. For more information on dental care, or to schedule an appointment, contact our Ocala family dentist office today at 352-867-7181!
