Dental trauma that results in a cracked or broken tooth doesn’t necessarily mean the end of your tooth. Damaged teeth can often be restored with dental crowns. Are crowns good for your teeth? Absolutely! Dental crowns have been used for years to repair, protect, and support damaged teeth to restore their function and usefulness. If your tooth can be restored, Drs. Robert Evelyn and Wayne Harper from Ocala Smiles in Ocala, Florida, will recommend a tooth crown procedure to do so.
Here are the steps you can expect to take to have a crown successfully fitted onto your tooth:
Dr. Evelyn or Dr. Harper will inspect your tooth and assess the damage to determine if a crown is your best option for treatment. We’ll take x-rays to thoroughly evaluate your condition and plan your procedure. We’ll treat these issues if we uncover a tooth infection or decay before scheduling crown treatment. During your initial consultation, we’ll also discuss the different types of crowns, i.e., metal, ceramic, porcelain, and porcelain fused to metal, and help you decide which would be best for you.
Crowns are hollow caps that fit over existing teeth. Before a crown can be placed, your tooth must be prepped, which entails altering its current structure. We may reshape your tooth, file it down, or smooth out jagged edges to accommodate your crown. If part of your tooth is missing, that particular section may need to be rebuilt, so your tooth can support a crown. Tooth prep is a must to get an accurate fitting for your crown.
Dental crowns are custom-made in a lab from a digital impression or a mold of your prepped tooth and surrounding teeth. The impressions are used as a blueprint to obtain precise measurements for your crown. As a custom crown can take one or two weeks to complete, we’ll shield your tooth with a temporary crown during this interim period to keep it safe from harm.
We’ll contact you when your permanent crown is ready so you can come and have it fitted. The temporary crown will be removed, and the permanent crown will be put in its place. We’ll ensure the crown fits comfortably and that you have a good bite before cementing it in place permanently. Once bonded to your tooth, the crown becomes a permanent part of your smile.
Good oral hygiene is the basis for caring for your crown, which entails daily brushing, flossing, and seeing your Ocala dentist twice a year for dental exams and cleanings. We’ll check the health and state of your crown during your visits to ensure it’s in good shape. With proper care, your crown can last 5 to 15 years.
