The following FAQs explain more about dental crown treatment:
A crown is a tooth-shaped, hollow cap used to restore a worn, decayed, or damaged tooth. It’s custom-made in a lab and will cover your entire tooth. Crowning a compromised tooth makes it fully functional again and protects it from further damage.
Crowns can be made from ceramic, porcelain, gold, metal alloys, or a combination of these materials. Metal crowns are the strongest and will last the longest. They work best on compromised back teeth to fortify them for chewing. Porcelain crowns look more like natural teeth, making them a better choice for repairing front teeth that are readily visible when you smile.Â
Teeth compromised by decay or damage can cause pain when you chew. They’re also at risk of further breakage with continued use. Crowning decayed or damaged teeth restores their chewing power, protects them from further damage, and salvages their usefulness. A worn or fragile tooth can be crowned to keep it from cracking or crumbling. Root canal teeth are often crowned to reinforce their weakened structure. Crowns also help complete other restorative treatments like dental implants and bridges.
Dr. Evelyn or Dr. Harper will prep your tooth by modifying or reshaping its structure. Then we’ll take a mold of your tooth to get accurate measurements for your crown. This mold is sent to a lab where crowns are fabricated. Meanwhile, we’ll cover your tooth with a temporary crown. When your permanent crown is ready, we’ll place it over your tooth and cement it in place permanently.Â
No. We’ll numb your mouth for this procedure to keep you comfortable and pain-free. You can also request dental sedation to keep you calm and relaxed during this treatment.  Â
Gold and metal crowns can last a lifetime. Ceramic and porcelain crowns generally last 10 – 15 years, depending on how well you care for your crowned teeth. Good brushing and flossing habits can help your crown last longer and function better over the long haul. Routine dental cleanings will also contribute to the long-term health and function of your crown.  Â
