At Ocala Smiles, we take tooth extraction seriously. Ideally, we try to save your teeth through restorative treatments to protect the integrity of your smile. Sometimes, however, extraction is the best course ofย action to restore your oral health. Although the idea of extraction can sound intimidating, you’ll be happy to hear that the extraction procedure is fairly routine. Dr. Robert Evelyn is the person to see for tooth extractions in the Ocala, Florida area. ย
Here are some signs that may indicate you need to have a tooth removed:
Periodontal disease is a severe gum infection that can lead to receding gums and bone loss, causing your teeth to come loose. Loose teeth caused by periodontal disease can’t be saved. Removing these teeth can help curtail the spread of the disease.
Severe tooth pain is often a sign of untreated decay, which has entered the pulp of your tooth and infected the nerves. If the decay can’t be treated with a root canal or filling, Dr. Evelyn may need to extract your tooth to relieve your pain and restore your oral health.
Oral infections are generally treated with root canal therapy. This entails removing the infected pulp, cleansing the canals, filling the tooth, and covering it with a crown. If the infection is too severe for treatment or your tooth is too compromised to save, we’ll have your tooth removed. Extracting your tooth will put an end to the infection and prevent complications in the future.
Extraction may be needed if dental trauma or accidental injury causes excessive structural damage to a tooth, leaving it beyond repair. Rather than risk further complications with your tooth, Dr. Evelyn will have it removed.
When there’s insufficient space to accommodate your teeth in your mouth, overcrowding can occur, causing teeth to grow crooked or on top of each other. Extracting one or two teeth can make more space for the rest of your teeth to align properly. Dr. Evelyn may recommend extracting one or more teeth to relieve overcrowding before undergoing orthodontic treatment.
Another sign you may need a tooth-pulling procedure is impacted wisdom teeth. If there’s no room for these teeth to come through, it’s best to remove them. Otherwise, these teeth can cause pain, infection, alignment issues, and other complications that can harm your oral health.
Tooth extraction may be necessary before undergoing denture, bridge, or implant treatment. Dr. Evelyn may need to remove natural teeth to accommodate your restorations and restore full tooth functionality. We’ll discuss this option with you during your initial denture or implant treatment consultation.
