What is crown lengthening, and how does it improve a gummy smile?

At Ocala Smiles, Drs. Robert Evelyn, Wayne Harper, and our team in Ocala, Florida, work directly with new and current patients to help them with their oral health concerns. Sometimes, this includes cosmetic work to improve the look of the teeth and gums. Patients with a gummy smile often feel self-conscious about how their smile looks, but crown lengthening procedures can enhance the overall appearance for improved confidence and self-esteem.

What is crown lengthening surgery, and what does it achieve?

Patients with a gummy smile might benefit from cosmetic crown lengthening treatment. This dental procedure involves reshaping the gum line to show more natural tooth structure. Doing this will result in a more proportionate and aesthetically pleasing smile. It restores the balance between gum tissue and tooth enamel for a more attractive look to the teeth and gums.

Crown lengthening surgery is typically performed by our dentists, who specialize in addressing common dental issues like gum disease and other related conditions. The goal of this procedure is to expose more of the crown, the visible portion of the tooth, by removing excess gum tissue. This allows for better access, making it easier to treat and restore any damaged or decayed areas that may also be treated at the same time.

Aside from its cosmetic benefits, crown lengthening surgery also has functional advantages. Exposing more of the tooth’s surface can effectively support dental restorations, including crowns, bridges, and implants. It also helps create adequate space between the tooth and bone for a proper fit, ensuring long-term stability for these restorations. In some cases, this procedure can also address deep pockets in gum tissue caused by periodontal disease, making it easier to clean and maintain good oral hygiene.
